Why AP finishing is unusually revealing

AP describes a Royal Oak case and bracelet as having 24 bevel edges, 27 surfaces with different finishing and 16 screw heads. Broad satin brushing meets narrow mirror-polished bevels across the bezel, case and bracelet. The design depends on those boundaries remaining straight, even and coherent.

Minor hairlines can be honest wear. A dent on a critical edge or repeated refinishing can remove metal and permanently alter the silhouette. Evaluate the shape under direct and diffuse light before deciding whether a cosmetically cleaner watch is actually better preserved.

Signs of excessive refinishing

• Rounded bezel corners or edges that no longer meet crisply.
• Polished bevels that vary in width or disappear near case and bracelet transitions.
• Brushing that crosses boundaries, changes direction or looks unusually coarse.
• Soft recesses around screws, crown guards or pushers.
• Uneven case or bracelet symmetry.
• Deep damage partly blended away while the underlying geometry remains distorted.

A carefully executed light refinish is not automatically disqualifying, and “unpolished” is not automatically superior if the watch has severe impacts or corrosion. The seller should disclose what is known. AP says aesthetic refreshings should be limited and recommends no more than three to five over a watch’s lifetime.

Links, articulation, fit and clasp

On a Royal Oak, the bracelet continues the case design. Check lateral movement between links, vertical articulation, deep impacts, uneven finishing, clasp security and the presence of enough correct links for the intended wrist. Excessive side-to-side looseness can indicate wear even when the top surfaces look clean.

AP advises a proper fit to improve winding efficiency and avoid premature link wear. Missing steel links are inconvenient; missing gold or platinum links can create a material replacement cost. Confirm that plots, screws, intermediate links and clasp match the complete reference.

For flexible straps, check length, cracking, hardening, discoloration, holes, keeper and the correct pin buckle or deployant. A replacement strap may be consumable; a mismatched clasp or plots are a configuration issue.

Ceramic resists many surface scratches but can chip or fracture under severe impact. Titanium and composite surfaces behave differently from steel and gold. Never assume a polishing technique is transferable across materials.

Dial, hands, date, crown, pushers and movement

Reconcile every visible component with the complete reference and period. Service replacements are genuine parts fitted during maintenance and may improve function, but they can affect collector value on discontinued references. Aftermarket components are outside the factory configuration and require explicit disclosure.

• Check dial printing, Tapisserie or other surface, markers, lume and date aperture.
• Confirm hands, date wheel and logo treatment match the reference and era.
• Inspect crown, pushers, bezel and screws for correct material and execution.
• Verify calibre, function, serial records and service documentation privately.
• Ask whether any case, bracelet, dial, hands or movement components were replaced.

Box, papers, service records and AP documents

A complete modern set can support provenance, confidence and resale, but boxes and cards can be separated from watches. Match the private numbers and reference carefully and examine the physical watch.

AP distinguishes two official documents. An Extract from the Archives confirms that submitted case and movement numbers appear in its records; AP expressly says it does not warrant authenticity. A Certificate of Authenticity follows physical examination by AP experts in Le Brassus and certifies the watch, materials and components.

AP photo and video checklist

1. Straight-on dial and bezel in neutral light.
2. Oblique views of all bezel edges and polished bevels.
3. Both case sides, crown, pushers and guards.
4. Caseback with sensitive serial digits masked publicly.
5. Full bracelet laid flat, both sides, clasp and every supplied link.
6. Macro views of any impact, chip, dent, heavy scratch or suspected refinish.
7. Movement only when opened by a qualified professional or visible through the factory caseback.
8. Box, card, papers and service documents with sensitive information masked.
9. Video of winding, setting and complication operation.
10. Wrist or articulation video when fit is part of the decision.

When to service or refinish

AP recommends periodic checks of performance, water resistance and magnetization. Functional service and exterior refinishing are separate decisions. A watch can need movement service without needing its exterior altered.

When refinishing is appropriate, use qualified AP-trained or authorized expertise capable of preserving each surface and edge. AP recommends limiting the number of aesthetic refreshings. Ask what will be refinished, what will be replaced and whether removed components will be returned where policy permits.

For a current purchase, price the watch in its actual condition. Do not assume every scratch can be removed safely or that a future polish will restore lost geometry.
