The Royal Oak is a system, not one watch
The 1972 reference 5402 treated the octagonal bezel, thin case and integrated bracelet as one continuous composition. That design logic now spans time-and-date models, the Jumbo Extra-Thin, chronographs, perpetual calendars, openworked watches and high complications. The name stays constant; the ownership experience does not.
The design also makes preservation unusually visible. Broad satin planes, polished bevels, recessed surfaces and sharp transitions can look superficially clean after aggressive refinishing while losing the geometry collectors value.

How 37, 39 and 41 mm Royal Oaks wear
A Royal Oak typically occupies more wrist than a conventional round watch with the same nominal diameter. The bracelet begins visually at the case, and the first links help determine the real footprint. Wrist shape and top-surface width matter as much as circumference.

Do not choose by wrist circumference alone. Compare top-of-wrist width, first-link behavior, bracelet sizing and how much presence you actually want. The 39 mm Jumbo is not simply a midpoint between 37 and 41 mm; thinness changes the experience.
Reference generations that change the purchase
15300 → 15400 → 15500 → 15510
The 15300 used a 39 mm case; the 15400 moved the larger family to 41 mm. The 15500 introduced Calibre 4302, while the 15510 revised dial architecture, signature treatment and bracelet ergonomics without making the 15500 irrelevant.
15450 → 15550
Both are important 37 mm paths, but the 15550 introduced Calibre 5900 and its own dial and bracelet-era details. “Smaller” does not mean visually slight on an integrated bracelet.
5402 → 15202 → 16202
The 5402 established the concept. The 15202 carried the ultra-thin Calibre 2121 lineage; the 16202 introduced Calibre 7121 in 2022 while preserving the no-running-seconds Jumbo character.
26320 → 26331 → 26240
The 26331 remains desirable for its proportions and dial executions. The 26240 is thicker and adds the integrated automatic flyback Calibre 4401 plus an exhibition caseback.
Older does not mean obsolete
A discontinued dial, movement, thickness or bracelet feel can be exactly why a buyer prefers the prior generation. Compare experience and condition before calendar age.
The suffix identifies the watch
A root such as 15510ST identifies a family, not the exact dial. Material, decoration, bracelet or strap and dial suffixes must all reconcile with the individual watch.

A newer calibre can improve power reserve or architecture without automatically making the newer watch the better purchase. Thickness, dial preference, bracelet feel, condition and price all remain part of the decision.
Dials, materials and the full reference
Royal Oak dials include Petite and Grande Tapisserie patterns, openworked constructions, stone, lacquer, smoked treatments and specialist exceptions. Never assume a suffix has one universal color meaning across every model family.
Common material codes include ST for stainless steel, OR for pink gold, BA for yellow gold, BC for white gold, PT for platinum, TI for titanium and CE for ceramic. The full reference must match the dial, case, bracelet or strap, clasp and movement—not merely the visible color.
Condition is part of the Royal Oak’s architecture
Read the geometry
Inspect bezel corners, broad brushed planes, polished bevel width, recessed surfaces and transitions from case to bracelet under direct light.
Fit depends on the links
Check lateral play, articulation, clasp security, deep impacts and whether enough correct links are included for the buyer’s wrist.
Reconcile every component
Confirm dial, hands, date wheel, crown, caseback, movement, serial records and disclosed service replacements against the full reference.
Service components are not automatically unacceptable, and careful refinishing is not the same as destructive polishing. The standard is disclosure, coherent geometry and pricing that reflects what the watch actually is.
