Reference-led buying guide

Best Two-Tone Luxury Watches

Steel and gold, chosen for the way you live. Compare eight starting points from Rolex, Tudor, Omega and Breitling by function, fit, gold construction and the details of the exact watch offered.

Our starting recommendation: a Datejust for everyday versatility, a Submariner for a more pronounced sports-watch identity, or a GMT-Master II if a second time zone matters. The best choice depends on your wrist, your preferred gold tone and your actual use.

This is a Rolex-led buying shortlist with distinct Tudor, Omega and Breitling alternatives, not an exhaustive catalog or a ranking by resale price. The reference families below are distinct choices; dial, bracelet and production details still need to be matched to the individual listing.

Which two-tone watch should you choose—and when should you pass?

Our selection starts with six familiar Rolex and Tudor configurations and adds two different answers to the same buying question. Choose a function and a wearing experience first. A higher price, more gold or a more recognizable name does not automatically make a better watch for your wrist.

Datejust 36 or 41: the everyday starting point

Choose it when you want steel-and-gold character without making a sports function the center of the watch. Start with the 36 if you favor a compact silhouette; compare the 41 if you want more dial presence.

Pass or reconsider if you need a rotating timing bezel, a second time zone or a chronograph. Before paying more for a particular dial, compare its legibility and appearance with your preferred bracelet. Size and dial preference are separate decisions.

Submariner: the pronounced sports choice

Choose it when a dive-watch layout and contrasting gold details are the appeal. The blue 126613LB and black 126613LN answer the same functional brief; their color changes the visual statement.

Pass or reconsider if you mainly want a discreet dress watch or travel-time function. Compare the blue and black two-tone Submariners before allowing a nickname to make the decision.

GMT-Master II: travel with warmer gold

Choose the 126711CHNR when a second time zone is genuinely useful and the steel-and-Everose combination is the palette you prefer. Its brown-and-black bezel is a different proposition from yellow gold and a bright blue dial.

Pass or reconsider if you only want the gold color. Compare a Datejust before paying for a travel watch you do not intend to use. Confirm the exact bracelet, condition and included set in either case.

Daytona: buy it for the chronograph and dial

Choose the 126503 when the Daytona’s chronograph layout and steel-and-yellow-gold presentation are what you want. Compare actual dial photographs in ordinary light; reflections and subdial contrast matter more than a stock image suggests.

Pass or reconsider if time-at-a-glance simplicity is your priority. Compare it with a Datejust, or with the Chronomat below if a different chronograph design appeals. Two-tone does not make the Daytona the automatic resale winner.

Tudor Black Bay GMT S&G: a different construction choice

Choose it if you enjoy the Black Bay GMT design and want its travel function in a steel-and-gold appearance. Compare the actual quote with the alternatives rather than assuming a fixed price gap.

Pass or reconsider if its 14.6 mm thickness is uncomfortable or you expect every gold-colored component to be solid gold. The gold-capped construction described below is an important distinction, not a detail to hide.

Omega Seamaster: an alternative to the Rolex dive-watch look

Choose reference 210.20.42.20.03.001 if a 42 mm blue-dial Seamaster in steel and yellow gold is the design you prefer. It belongs on the shortlist because it offers a different visual identity, not because a general claim about brand value settles the purchase.

Pass or reconsider if you are buying it as a substitute for the Submariner you actually want. Compare both on a similarly sized wrist and confirm the bracelet configuration. Explore the Seamaster guide or ask us to source this reference; inclusion here does not mean it is in stock.

Breitling Chronomat: a distinct chronograph alternative

Choose UB0158101B1U1 if you prefer its steel-and-red-gold construction and Rouleaux bracelet. Breitling specifies a 42 mm case, 13.77 mm thickness, B01 automatic chronograph and approximately 70 hours of power reserve for this reference.

Pass or reconsider if you prefer the Daytona’s proportions or a simpler time-and-date watch. Older Chronomat references differ: do not apply these dimensions to every B01 42. Explore Breitling or request this exact reference; availability must be confirmed.

How much should you pay for a two-tone watch?

Compare current, like-for-like offers: full reference, dial, bracelet, condition, warranty-card date and included links. The live watch cards show our listed prices when an exact example is available. We do not substitute a manufacturer’s retail price for an offer you can actually buy.

Separate the price into three questions: what does the exact watch cost today, what extra amount are you paying for your preferred metal or dial, and what additional ownership costs could follow? Missing bracelet links, condition concerns or an unclear service history can change the comparison.

For an immediate purchase, part of a market premium can reflect access to the desired configuration now. It is not proof that the reference is scarce, and it does not guarantee that the premium will be recovered on resale.

Our preference is to compare a watch you would happily keep with one credible alternative before stretching the budget. If two-tone is the look you want, buy it for that reason; do not treat gold content as an investment forecast.

Two-tone describes an appearance. Construction needs a closer look.

Rolex Rolesor

Rolesor is Rolex’s name for combining steel and gold. This guide concentrates on the visibly contrasting yellow-gold and Everose-gold references above. A gold-colored dial alone does not make a watch a steel-and-gold reference.

Use the full reference and the manufacturer’s material specification to identify the configuration. Then match those details to the watch, bracelet and documentation in the listing.

Tudor S&G

Do not assume that every gold-colored component has the same construction across brands. Tudor specifies a steel bezel core covered with a gold cap on M79833MN-0001. Its bracelet combines solid-gold first center links with other steel or gold-capped steel center links.

This is useful ownership information when comparing wear, finishing and price. It should be disclosed clearly, rather than reduced to a generic “gold and steel” label.

For deeper family comparisons, continue through our Omega buying guide and Breitling buying guide. Ask the Buying Desk to compare the exact two-tone configurations that meet your size and budget requirements.

Choose the watch you will enjoy wearing.

Everyday and dress

Start with Datejust 36 and 41 if the watch needs to move comfortably between work, evenings and ordinary daily wear. Compare both on a wrist similar to yours. A larger dial is not automatically a better fit; case span, thickness, bracelet sizing and clasp position all contribute.

Use our Rolex size guide and Oyster versus Jubilee comparison to narrow the decision.

Sport and travel

Choose between a rotating dive bezel, a second time zone and a chronograph before deciding which dial looks best in a photograph. These functions serve different purposes. The Submariner, GMT-Master II and Daytona are not interchangeable simply because each is a Rolex sports watch.

Compare the steel and two-tone Submariner, then use the sport chronograph guide if elapsed-time measurement is part of your shortlist.

Our visual preference: judge the complete combination—dial, bezel, gold tone and bracelet—in natural light. Ask for additional photographs of the exact example if reflections make the dial or polished center links difficult to assess.

Move from the reference to the exact watch.

Condition, included set and current availability belong to the individual listing. The featured examples below, when available, link directly to those product pages.

Before you commit, make the details explicit.

  1. Identity: confirm the full reference, dial, bezel and bracelet configuration. A familiar nickname does not replace the reference number.
  2. Condition: distinguish unworn from previously worn and ask about polishing, visible handling marks and any replaced components.
  3. Included set: confirm the box, warranty documentation, dated card where applicable, manuals and spare links. “Complete set” should resolve into an actual list of what accompanies that watch.
  4. Fit: establish bracelet length and the number of included links before delivery. Make any sizing request part of the conversation.
  5. Transaction: confirm availability, the quoted price, delivery arrangements and applicable purchase terms with the Buying Desk.

Continue with our box and papers guide, Rolex authentication guide and reviews and purchase-protection information. The objective is a clearly documented purchase of the right example.

Questions buyers ask.

Which two-tone Rolex should I consider first?

Our starting point is the Datejust for broad everyday use. Move to the Submariner for its dive-watch character, GMT-Master II for travel, or Daytona for a chronograph. This is an editorial recommendation based on use and fit, not a claim that one reference is best for everyone.

Is a two-tone watch a better investment than steel?

Metal content alone does not determine resale performance. Compare the exact reference, your purchase price, condition, included set and market demand. This guide does not forecast returns or promise future value.

Should I choose yellow gold or a warmer rose-gold tone?

Compare the full watch in ordinary lighting and alongside the jewelry you wear. In this shortlist, the 126711CHNR provides the steel-and-Everose option; the listed Datejust, Submariner and Daytona references use yellow gold. Preference is personal.

Can the Buying Desk help if my preferred configuration is absent?

Yes. Send the reference or a description of your preferred size, dial, metal and budget through Source a Watch. The Buying Desk can discuss the request and confirm the options available to you.
