Breitling Superocean Buying Guide
Superocean is Breitling's performance-led mechanical dive family, built around legibility, a timing bezel, screw-locked crown and meaningful water resistance.
Choose it over Superocean Heritage when modern tool-watch character matters more than polished retro styling.
A dive-watch history with modern reference-specific capability
Breitling launched its first SuperOcean time-only diver and chronograph in 1957. The early watches combined 200 m water resistance with strong contrast and oversized markers. Later Slow Motion chronographs and Deep Sea references expanded the technical lineage.
History explains the design family; the exact modern reference determines present capability. Never transfer a vintage or Super Diver depth claim to a standard current watch.
Thirty-six to forty-six millimeters
The current official catalog includes 36, 42, 44 and 46 mm standard automatics plus the 46 mm Super Diver. The 36 mm retains serious 300 m construction rather than functioning merely as a cosmetic reduction. The 42 mm is the balanced mainstream choice; 44 and 46 mm increase dial, bezel and wrist coverage.
Three hundred meters or one thousand meters
The selected 36 and 42 mm references use Breitling 17 and are rated to 300 m. The selected 46 mm Super Diver uses Breitling 10, a titanium case and bracelet, and a 1,000 m rating.
Titanium reduces mass but does not make a 46 × 14.515 mm case physically small. Buy Super Diver for its scale and specialized capability, not because a higher depth number automatically improves ordinary wear.
Breitling 17 and Breitling 10
The current Superocean prioritizes a clean dive display rather than a chronograph. Selected standard references use Breitling 17 with approximately 38 hours of reserve; the selected Super Diver uses Breitling 10 with approximately 42 hours.
Check winding, crown engagement, timekeeping, reserve and service history. A healthy maintained movement and case-sealing system matter more in use than a small reserve difference.
Depth rating does not survive neglect automatically
The crown, tube, crystal, caseback and gaskets must work together. Pressure-test any pre-owned Superocean before swimming or diving and after case-opening service. Confirm bezel direction, indexing and alignment; never manipulate the crown underwater.
A mechanical watch is a timing aid, not a substitute for a dive computer or redundant safety equipment.
Attachment changes balance and apparent scale
A steel bracelet distributes mass across the wrist; rubber reduces formality and changes balance; titanium is lighter but develops a different surface-wear pattern. Configuration-specific weight must be named by full SKU.
Compare the 42 vs. 44 vs. 46 guide for exact dimensions. Avoid arbitrary wrist-size cutoffs: upper-wrist width and case overhang are more useful.
Bezel, crown, seals and refinishing
Inspect bezel teeth and insert, crown threads, crown guards, crystal coating, caseback and clasp. Look for residue or corrosion in creases and for polishing that has softened the case.
Confirm dial, hands, bezel, case material, movement and attachment against the full reference. Request the actual pressure-test result when water use is intended.

Superocean buying FAQs
What is the best all-around Superocean size?
For many buyers, 42 mm offers a balanced combination of presence, thickness and 300 m capability. Wrist geometry still matters.
Does the 36 mm Superocean have less water resistance?
Not in the selected current reference. A17377211C1S1 is officially rated to 300 m, the same as the selected 42 mm model.
What makes the Super Diver different?
The selected Super Diver uses a 46 mm titanium case and is rated to 1,000 m rather than 300 m.
Is titanium always more comfortable than steel?
It reduces mass, but comfort also depends on diameter, thickness, bracelet sizing and wrist shape.
Can I dive with a pre-owned Superocean immediately?
Not responsibly without knowing its service history and current seal condition. Obtain an appropriate pressure test first.
Should I choose a bracelet or rubber strap?
Choose the bracelet for a substantial integrated presentation and rubber for a more casual water-oriented setup, then compare exact configuration weight and clasp.
