Pick the Function Before the Color

The 5167 is the cleanest expression of the men's Aquanaut: time, date and sweep seconds with an uncluttered embossed dial. The 5164 adds local and home time, separate day/night indications and a date coupled to local time. The 5968 adds a self-winding flyback chronograph with central chronograph seconds and a 60-minute counter.

These are not trim levels of one watch. The 5167 is the simplest everyday option, the 5164 is the travel tool and the 5968 is the elapsed-time sports chronograph. Metal and color matter, but choosing a function the owner will use creates the strongest decision.

Case Size, Dial Density and Strap Fit

The 5167 and 5164 occupy a related size class, but the 5164's left-side pushers, extra hand, apertures and date subdial make it visually and mechanically denser. The 5968 uses a larger case and more assertive chronograph layout. Its 60-minute counter echoes the rounded-octagonal bezel, but the overall watch has greater wrist presence.

Every composite strap must be evaluated as part of the watch. A strap cut for a previous owner may not fit, and clasp position can affect comfort even when length is adequate. Metal also changes weight: steel, white gold and rose gold versions should not be assumed to feel alike because they share an Aquanaut outline.

Steel, White Gold and Rose Gold

Reference suffix is essential. The 5167A is steel, while 5167R is rose gold. Current 5164 anchors include white-gold 5164G and rose-gold 5164R; the earlier 5164A steel Travel Time is discontinued. The 5968 family spans steel, white-gold and rose-gold references depending on suffix and generation.

Material changes both look and market context. White gold can appear understated while carrying precious-metal weight; rose gold has a warmer, more visible character; steel often has its own scarcity and secondary-market narrative. Compare exact configurations instead of assigning a single price level to the reference number without suffix.

Function Testing and Condition Review

The 5167 needs date and basic timekeeping review. The 5164 requires a demonstration of both local-hour pushers, home-time indication, day/night apertures and date coupling. The 5968 requires complete flyback-chronograph testing, including start, stop, reset, flyback and counter advance.

All three need case, bezel, crown, strap and clasp inspection. Polishing can soften the intended contrast between satin and polished surfaces. Pressure-test status must be stated separately from the reference's published water resistance, and no buyer should activate pushers underwater.
