The four-millimetre diameter difference is meaningful, but thickness, dial opening, case corners and first links determine how much of the wrist the watch occupies.
Why Royal Oak diameter can mislead
A conventional round watch often narrows into articulated lugs or a flexible strap. A Royal Oak’s case and bracelet form one visual object, and the first links continue the case’s width. A 37 mm Royal Oak can therefore have more presence than its number suggests, while the 41 mm can span a flat wrist elegantly but overhang a rounder wrist with similar circumference.

The size decision also changes the movement
Calibre 5900 allows AP to maintain the slimmer 37 mm case and provides a stated 60-hour reserve. Calibre 4302 fills the larger 41 mm architecture and provides a stated 70-hour reserve. Both offer centre seconds and date in these references.
The ten-hour reserve difference is real but rarely more important than fit. Movement service, warranty status and the condition of the entire watch should outweigh a paper specification that does not change how the buyer will wear it.
Dial, metal and gemsetting can change the result
Not every dial or material appears in both sizes at the same time. Steel, pink or yellow gold, factory-set bezels and exact Tapisserie colors can dominate the decision. Compare like with like where possible, and use the complete reference to distinguish case, bracelet and dial.
A buyer who wants one specific 37 mm dial should not be pushed to 41 mm merely because the latter is more widely discussed. Likewise, a buyer who wants the visual span of a 41 mm steel Royal Oak should not treat the 37 mm as a compromise based only on availability.
Bracelet sizing and condition
Confirm that the watch includes enough correct links, the clasp closes securely and the bracelet articulates without excessive lateral play. Replacement links are reference- and material-sensitive. Missing precious-metal links can materially change the acquisition cost.
Inspect the taper and transitions for uneven refinishing. AP advises a proper wrist fit to reduce premature wear. The choice should be made with the bracelet sized near the intended position, not hanging loose for a photograph.

The bracelet is unsized, the seller provides only close-up product photos or the two examples differ radically in metal, dial or condition.
Thirty-seven millimetres is not “women’s only,” and 41 mm is not inherently more masculine or valuable. AP itself presents modern sizes across a broad audience. Fit and design preference are the relevant criteria.
