Minute Repeater, Sonnerie and Alarm Are Different

A minute repeater chimes the time on demand when its slide or activator is operated, traditionally sounding hours, quarter-hours and the remaining minutes. A grande sonnerie can strike hours and quarters in passing, while a petite sonnerie follows a more limited passing-strike pattern. A chiming alarm sounds a selected time rather than announcing the current time on demand.

The 5531G adds World Time and chimes local time; the 5374G combines a repeater with a perpetual calendar; the 6301P unites grande and petite sonnerie with a minute repeater; and the 2026 5322G is a water-resistant chiming alarm, not a minute repeater.

How to Evaluate the Sound

Tone is only one part of acoustic quality. Listen for the sequence's accuracy, rhythm, separation between notes, clarity, volume and decay. Case metal, dimensions, construction and the condition of the individual movement can affect perception. Recordings are useful for education but cannot reproduce how a watch sounds in a quiet room or how vibration is felt in the hand.

A buyer should hear the exact watch, not another example of the reference. Activate it only according to the manufacturer's procedure and never force a slide or control. Abnormal tempo, incomplete sequences, buzzing, weak strikes or an interruption deserve specialist inspection rather than repeated testing.

A chiming watch warrants heightened diligence. Confirm the exact movement and case numbers where available, reference configuration, service record, acoustic operation, case condition and dial originality. Use a specialist familiar with Patek Philippe acoustic movements. Generic authentication or a timegrapher reading does not establish that a repeater is healthy.

Plan transport and insurance before the transaction. Mechanical shocks, magnetism, moisture and improper operation can have outsized consequences. Written terms should identify who performed the inspection, what was tested, whether water resistance was tested where relevant, and what warranty applies.
