Breitling Navitimer vs. Chronomat: Which Collection Fits You?

Choose the interface and use case, not the shared calibre

Choose Navitimer when the circular slide rule, aviation history and information-dense dial are the reason for the purchase. Choose Chronomat when a more water-oriented sports case, rider-tab identity and Rouleaux bracelet are the priorities.

The Chronomat in this table is the current MY26 reference, not an outgoing AB0134101 generation. Do not carry the older generation's dimensions into this comparison.

Aviation calculation or all-purpose sport

Breitling traces Navitimer to 1952, when Willy Breitling developed a wrist chronograph with a circular slide rule for flight calculations. The AB0138211B1A1 keeps that operational scale, the AOPA-wing identity and the deliberately information-rich dial.

Chronomat's modern identity looks back to the 1983 Frecce Tricolori project and the Chronomat introduced for Breitling's centennial in 1984. The current MY26 B01 42 retains the four rider tabs and Rouleaux bracelet while presenting them in an updated integrated construction.

• Neither name specifies one watch: size, metal, dial, movement and attachment still depend on the full reference.

B01 removes movement origin as the deciding factor

Both selected references use the automatic, COSC-certified Manufacture Calibre B01. Breitling specifies approximately 70 hours of power reserve, a column-wheel chronograph architecture and a vertical clutch for the B01 family.

Because the movement proposition is closely aligned, the rational distinction shifts to interface, water rating, case architecture and attachment. Test start, stop and reset on any pre-owned example and confirm that the chronograph seconds hand returns precisely to zero.

Dial opening and bracelet geometry change perceived size

The selected Navitimer is 43 mm by 13.69 mm; the selected Chronomat is 42 mm by 13.77 mm. Their published thicknesses differ by only 0.08 mm, so the larger experiential difference comes from the Navitimer's broad, detailed dial and slide rule versus the Chronomat's rider-tab bezel and integrated bracelet.

Navitimer AB0138211B1A1 uses a 22 mm in-between-lug measurement and a seven-row bracelet. Breitling lists a 20.05 mm in-between-lug interface and a 22 mm bracelet-lug value for current Chronomat AB0158101C1A1. Replacement attachments should therefore be ordered by full reference, not by a rounded family assumption.

Thirty meters and two hundred meters are not interchangeable

The exact Navitimer is rated to 30 m and has a non-screw-locked crown with two gaskets. Treat it as an aviation chronograph whose water exposure should be conservative and whose current seal condition must be known.

The exact current Chronomat is rated to 200 m. That makes it the clear choice of this pair when water exposure is a real requirement, but it does not remove the need for regular seal inspection and pressure testing. Chronograph pushers should not be operated underwater unless the applicable Breitling instructions expressly permit it.

Resolve these questions on the exact watch

1. Confirm the full reference and do not substitute specifications from a neighboring generation.
2. Try the seven-row Navitimer bracelet and integrated Rouleaux bracelet after correct sizing.
3. Inspect slide-rule alignment and rotation on the Navitimer.
4. Inspect rider tabs, bracelet articulation and micro-adjustment on the current Chronomat.
5. Test winding, time setting, date change and every chronograph function.
6. Request service history and a current pressure test when water exposure matters.
